Jimmy Thomson has been a working writer more than forty-five years. A journalist, television scriptwriter, and travel writer, he has also written true crime books, sports biographies and military history, and is a university lecturer and website editor.
He has written two crime ‘caper’ novels and two true-crime memoirs, as well as several books about Australian army engineers (sappers) during the Vietnam and Afghanistan Wars, and now, along with Lt Col George Hulse, the First World War.
He also writes serious crime fiction under the pen name James Dunbar. The first, Mole Creek, was published by Echo Publishing in 2024, and was shortlisted in the BAD Danger Awards.
James Dunbar’s latest crime offering, Twisted River, was published in 2025, and his third James Dunbar novel Blood Moon will be issued in late 2026. His crime writing has been described as blending sharp characterisation, suspenseful pacing, wry humour and real-world depth.
Jimmy Thomson lives in Kings Cross, Sydney, with his wife and their cats Trotsky and River.
